You may wonder how long the honeymoon period for the cloud was – well – it’s over once people see the real bill. Cloud repatriation is a real thing – so much so that Cisco wrote a nice article about it and there are dozens out there if you Google it.
Security policies, regulatory restrictions, and cost all factor into on prem vs cloud. We’re on prem here first when it makes sense and meets all the requirements. How about you?
You would be amazed (not) how many Synology NASs went in after people’s honeymoon with the cloud ended. I am very much seeing the same in my little business world. I’m even helping people get out of the cloud who asked me to help them into it less than 5 years ago.
I never left because compliance reasons but I do see a lot of consultants I talk to saying that it was going to happen. One thing the cloud did was really show how much you use and need a server. I see a lot of stuff moving to hybrid leaning more to on-prem than on cloud. After places move back there will need to be a real good reason to have a server. It shows people outside of IT that servers have a real per server cost.
