I started using gmail for the PBX email address to send from. All you had to do was turn on “less secure apps” in the portsl. Then they changed and started requiring a app specific password which was workable, but a pain, so I moved to Outlook.com and that worked till mid to late September. Microsoft no longer supports it, and when checking I found out that Google is stopping it on Jan 1st 2025. I am attempting to set it up with Yahoo right now, but it says it cannot generate app passwords at this time and to try later, so we’ll see how that goes. What is everyone else using?
Well I am currently using gmail and I know several customers are as well.
Do you know if gmail will just stop supporting it on new email accounts, or will it be disabled on all email accounts even if you are currently using the feature?
I think @tbare uses MailGun for a lot of stuff but I will let him chime in.
I was setting up email on a new GCC and could not get my new Outlook.com account to work. I then checked some other UCM’s that I was using it on and noticed that all the recent emails were failing. I searched and found that back in
September they are not allowing 3rd party apps to sign in. The device signing in has use " Modern Authentication Methods" and the app does not then they refer you to the app creator. I then went back to Gmail and set up an account there and when I went to set up a app specific password, I got the notice that as of 2025 it would no longer be allowed. I did not read far enough to answer your question about existing accounts. I am now at yahoo and their app password generator does not seem to be working right now, it keeps telling me to try again later. I did turn on 2FA to see if that was the issue. I may just have to go and pay for an email address. I see several sites where you can get basic email for $1 and month. I may say to heck with it and just get a domain name and buy a block of email slots to use just for the PBX’s I support.
This yet again might be a great use cases for smtp2go. I use it a lot for these types of alert situations. https://www.smtp2go.com
App Passwords still will work for this. https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords
What I saw said they were stopping the practice after Jan 2025. Update us after Jan 1st please. Thanks
Less secure apps and app passwords are two different things. If you have 2FA enabled, App Passwords should continue to work. I did a quick search and could not find anything indicating otherwise. It would be appreciated if you could provide a link to what you are referencing.
Well I have egg on my face. I know I am getting old, but… I was searching help while logged into gmail looking for app passwords and the instructions came up and there was a note on the right side of the page that stated it, or at least I thought it was. I just went back in and set one up and it is working. I could not find any mention of it. I stand corrected guys. Maybe I need some rest…LOL. Sorry for the confusion. I will be sure to grab a screen shot next time I see something like this.
