I am being pushed more and more back to a full Grandstream stack. I did not have a great experience with my GWN7664APs, but I really feel like something was wrong with them.
I ordered a GCC6010 and am going to spin up my GWN7813P switch again as my main switch. Now I just need to decide what APs to buy to replace my GWN7664s… It is NOT ideal, but I am deciding between two GWN7664e APs. One on a desk upstairs, one on the entertainment cabinet downstairs, or two GWN7661 APs same story 1 upstairs 1 downstairs.
I do have CAT6 between downstairs and upstairs where my little office nook is upstairs.
Just curious, what was your experience with the 7664s? I have to randomly reboot mine every 3 months or so because a few IOT things stop working correctly, but it could be that and not the AP. If you don’t need wifi6, the 7630s have been rock solid for me. I probably have 50 or so deployed. If you get the 7664e, let me/us know how you like it.
The GWN6664s were a weird experience for me. I was never able to get consistent speedy WiFi with low latency. I have a lot of APs I experiment with, and mostly positive results in the same install locations, but the 7664s always had latency (using speed tests) of well into the hundreds of milliseconds. The speed dropped off extremely fast while not very far away as well. I was getting better speed test performance out of the GWN7661s I had for a while. I ended up installing those at a family’s house so I don’t have them any more to play with.
I manage quite a few AP’s and I have been very happy with the GWN7664 AP’s. This is the one I use at my home. I am in a single story home and have been happy with just the one. I just did a speed test from my iPhone to my ISP’s speed test server and got 700+ up and down with 5ms of latency (1G fiber from my ISP). With that said, there were some really strange issues going on late last year with the firmware at that time. These issues seem to have been resolved the past few months, but I had to roll back several AP’s last year due to performance and connection issues with some devices.
Depending on when you were testing your 7664’s that could have accounted for your issues. Maybe give them another try with current firmware. I have been well pleased with the Grandstream AP’s. They are all I recommend these days, and I have replaced several different brands with the GWN line and almost always, performance and stability have improved. The only ones I have had to replace were due to lightning.
As for a full Grandstream stack, I have several locations that are 100% GS with the exception of the firewall. I did a few even with GS routers. I expect to be doing more full GS stacks now that they have a router/firewall with IDS/IPS.
Hope this helps. .
