Need to find a new smart switch/IOT system

I recently received an email from Belkin saying that, by the end of this year (2025), they will no longer be supporting the Wemo smart switch system and they will no longer work unless you use selected third party software. And even with that, they will not be supplying technical or other support.

I’ve been using the Wemo switches for about 10 years now. Looks like I will need to find a new smart switch system. I currently have 13 switches that will need replacing.

So I thought I’d see if you all had any recommendations for smart switch or home automation systems. I do not use, nor want to use, hubs like Siri, Alexa or Apple to run the systems.

Since many of you are “in the business”, so to speak, I would appreciate your input on what IOT/Smart Switch systems you recommend.

Thanks in advance.

I use all mechanical locks, our washer and dryer have a WiFi option but we don’t use it.

I try to not incorporate smart devices in my personal home – we don’t even have the smart assistants turned enabled on our cell phones.

Hopefully someone here will be able to help!

I have been using home assistant for the past year with various IOT devices. It can run locally without having to connect to any cloud services. Here is an article about how to use your wemo switches with home assistant. Belkin WeMo - Home Assistant

I use TP Link kasa smart light switches.

For off the shelf “smart switches” a lot of them can be re-flashed with Tasmota. This is an open-source firmware that does not require access to the web. It will load to most ESP8266 and ESP32 based devices. There are videos on YT with full instructions. I use it to monitor temps and to control a few outlets. Automation is not central, as each device has its own web page. I think it can be integrated into Home Assistant but can’t say for certain. Home Assistant has a huge support group so I can second zak706 comments.

I use roku smart switches

I believe those are Wyze with a custom roku firmware. Could be wrong but I thought I saw something about a partnership.

I’d assume the same thing about the roku cameras

Sorry about the delay. I’ve been out of town for the past couple weeks. Thanks for all the responses. I’ll try to address each.

“I use all mechanical locks, our washer and dryer have a WiFi option but we don’t use it.” - Same Here.

“I try to not incorporate smart devices in my personal home – we don’t even have the smart assistants turned enabled on our cell phones.” - Same here. I only have smart switches and a smart thermostat. And those are controlled by apps. I don’t use smart assistants at home or on any of our phones.

This is something that I am going to look in to as I would like to keep using the same Wemo switches. Although the email I got from Belkin said that they are not going to provide technical assistance or support after December 31 for any of their devices. I’m also a bit wary about using Home assistant, though.

I went to the Tasmota website and, as best as I can tell, they do not support the Wemo switches. I could be wrong but I didn’t see them listed under compatible devices.

Checked the Roku website but it doesn’t appear that they have smart (wall) switches.

I use the smart plugs. I would never use a smart receptacle or even a switch in the house. I use the plugs to turn on lights on a schedule or by pushing the button. I don’t use anything that has I ternet control in my home at all. The only thing I can do from remote is see the security system.

I’ll look into these.
Thanks!

Look into Shelly automation

That could be correct. I just know it works with a lot of the ESP8266 and ESP32 based units. Wemo may have locked down their stuff.
