Ubiquiti just jumped on that subscription wagon

Just received an email stating that I will now have to pay for UISP

UISP Hosting Professional ($29/month)
24/Supports up to 150 devices.
Offers enhanced features and capabilities.

UISP Hosting Carrier ($99/month)
24/Supports up to 10k devices.
Designed for large-scale deployments.

Is this only for UISP ?

Not surprising. You can always still self host on your own controller.

Currently you can host but this is how Meraki started and ended up all pay all the time.

Hosting = more work, more stress

Ubiquiti should not charge for UISP simply because they have dropped the ball on this side of the company. Edge, Airmax, hasn’t seen much for upgrades, new technology or much of anything really for a long time. The UISP line that they released, still doesn’t work well at all. The switch is ok, but the router is total garbage. But man, does Unifi have a lot going on! To bad unifi doesn’t work for me, and lots of people.

There are other options – other vendors are also catching up.

Grandstream just released a firmware for their router (less than $100) that now supports BGP, OSPF, and all kinds of VPN options.

Ill might move my UISP over to hostifi, at least there I’ll get support. I’ve been using the Hostifi tools for awhile now anyway, Hostifi is more expensive.

According to UISP - UISP Cloud Hosting FAQ – Ubiquiti Help Center, this is only if you have Ubiquiti hosting your UISP instance, if you self-host, or host in the cloud elsewhere, there will be no fees.

UI is bringing BGP to the Unifi line. That is added to the OSPF that they already have. And it looks like the free version of “Identity” will be getting the ability to sync with M365, Google Workspace or LDAP soon.

No support on EdgeMax with startup WISPS using it is bad enough – I can’t even imagine trying to get actual BGP support from the free tier (and from what I hear about the paid tier since people are still signing up with us) if you’re using this as a service provider.

My bigger issue isn’t the cost a bigger issue is the fact that there are certain functions on the hosted side that just don’t work like controlling the speeds of a connection or shutting down a connection due to non-payment. The other issue is they’re charging too much for up to 150 devices. If they can charge $99 a month for up to 10,000 devices then they can divide that by four and give me 2500 devices for $25 a month, I’d pay that. Without UISP I cannot control my customers remotely, nor can I add a new customer and configure the device with the subscription all at the same time while I’m in one location and not have to do it at a later time.
