Hypervisor of choice

What’s your hypervisor type 1 and type 2 platform?

Hyper-V isn’t going anywhere so I’m leaning to that to replace my VMWare deployments.

Deploying Hyper-V Core with Windows Admin Centre to manage the guest servers has been a useful way to deal with a couple of servers for small business clients.
First couple of times it took some trial and error to get right.
Considering other options like ProxMox atm.

Type 1: XCP-NG clusters (for 24/7 availability)
Type 2: Vmware Workstation 16 Pro on Windows 10 Pro

I looked at SCVMM to run Hyper-V as a front end but I also looked at Acronis Cloud Manager and it looked better all around. I am still waiting on pricing on both but if its the same I’ll go to Acronis.

In certain situations I’m going to have to run ProxMox. XCP-ng has a slick vmware converter that will auto convert the VMs by itself with little information. Such a tough gig – A lot of folks that I’ve talked to like Harvester’s UI over ProxMox.

Thanks Willie for mentioning Harvester. That one was NOT on my radar screen.

I’m running LXD + Docker + KVM today at two sites. I use Proxmox to host and manage a few nodes, but I want to get rid of it. I was planning to blow away my Proxmox installs in favour of simple Debian + Incus (LXD) + Docker + KVM, which is work, but everything is predictable and not excessively complicated.

Harvester might be a good option, but will take me a while to research it and spin up a test node.

[Update] Reviews of Harvester (1 year old) suggest the performance is a bit of a hog, especially Longhorn storage. Not sure if this is currently true, so I guess I need to spin up a system and tinker.

I also stumbled across OpenNebula, which looks interesting.

I’ll start a linked thread to ask for feedback on those two. Alternative Hypervisor Stacks - Harvester & OpenNebula
