Alternative Hypervisor Stacks - Harvester & OpenNebula

I didn’t want to cross contaminate Willi’s Hypervisor of choice thread, so I thought I’d post a new topic here. [Hope I’m doing this right]

Willie ticked my curiosity about Harvester, which was new to me. Based on a bit of reading (mostly 12+ month old posts) people seem to like it, but complained it is a performance hog, especially wrt Longhorn storage. I’m not sure if this is old status and things have improved or not.

I also stumbled across OpenNebula, which also looks interesting.

Question: Does anyone on the forum have any experience with them and advice? I want to eliminate two nodes running Proxmox and am looking for a better (simpler/more robust) solution for Docker containers, LXD/Incus and KVM VMs.

Harvester is a nice addition to Rancher that lets you run VM’s so if you are just running containers Rancher without Harvester maybe your best bet.

Thanks for the feedback! :grinning:

Now that Proxmox has the built in esxi converter that’s the direction I’m heading.
